Classen examines the history of the ballad "Jungeres Hildesbrandslied" to illuminate the role that the printing press played in the development of 15th- and 16-century fictional texts. The large number of prints from the early modern age serve as evidence that a form of mass culture had emerged which strongly supported the dissemination of such popular epic ballads as the "Jungeres Hildesbrandslied."
