  • The rehearsal of these esoteric particulars might seem to retard the forward motion of the narrative; yet the lines were memorable enough to survive in the players' reconstruction.3 Marlowe's scene brings the guise, leader of the catholic league and principal instigator of the massacre in the first scenes of the play, face to face with ramus, the most famous victim of the massacre.4 There is no evidence, however, that the guise planned the massacre; nor is there evidence to place him at the scene of ramus's murder. in bringing the guise to ramus, Marlowe also brings ramus to the very origin and center of the massacre; but is this where he belongs? if ramus plays the role of Protestant martyr in the play, Marlowe inserts an odd demurral on just this point when he has Taleus declare to the assassins: "i am as ramus is, a christian."
