Fisher has gained national attention with his autobiographical Vridar Hunter tetralogy, and now reviewers were lauding Idaho, A Guide in Word and Pictures, the first volume of the American Guide Series sponsored by FDR's Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration. With all his faults as a novelist, he was like no other writer; and his uniqueness was a splendid thing.23 From the material Wolfe had leftwith him, Aswell edited two novels-The Web and the Rock (1939) and You Can't Go Home Again (1940)-and a story collection, The Hills Beyond (1941), helping to cement Wolfe's reputation as a major writer of the twentieth century. To the end of his life, Fisher thought and wrote about Wolfe, using him in his long biographical novel Orphans in Gethsemane to counterpoint his own artistic vision.
