This article explores the role of Dr
Michael White
in regenerating New Orleans traditional music through his soulful improvisations and fresh compositions as well as his creative ensemble and parade performances. It also uses extensive interviews to document his remarkable ability as a scholarly expert who enables both university students and the general public to glean greater understanding of the nature and role of New Orleans music. His appointment as the first occupant of the Charles and Rosa Keller Chair in New Orleans Culture is discussed within this context.
