Malcolm Guthrie's Comparative Bantu (4 volumes, Westmead, England: Gregg Press, 1967-1971) fails to adequately characterize the phonological system of the parent language. Luganda's phonological system is described using A. E. Meeussens's "Les Phonemes du Ganda et du Bantu Commun," ((The Phonemes of Ganda & Common Bantu), Africa, 1955, 25, 170-180). Described are abstract rules for dealing with phonological rules, Meinhof's Rule, consonant gemination, palatalization, the "perfect" stem, & the class 5 prefix. Independent support is given to the assertion that Meinhof's Rule dates back to Proto-Bantu. A palatalization rule explains the behavior of d & j in Luganda. The use of abstract rules allows phonological inferences that can only be indirectly revealed by modern language phonological strings. Such rules reveal more linguistic history than the simple comparative method & also many of the basic grammatical regularities. D. Burkenroad
