• The Yiddish language provides an important instance of territorial overlapping of languages on a large scale significant enough to allow study of several important issues in linguistic geography & dialectology. A brief history of the development of Yiddish is provided. It is shown that for every region in Europe once inhabited by Ashkenazic Jews, there is a bilingual dialectology that makes it possible to study the similarities & differences in the organization of the cultural space in Jewish & non-Jewish groups in a particular region. A proposed study of regional differences in the effects of contact on Yiddish is also set forth. The accumulation of data for a Yiddish atlas is described. 8 Maps, 9 References. B. Annesser Murray
