  • It is noted that a proper understanding of the nature of habits & states & their formal representation in Eng requires a clear distinction between the grammatical categories of aspect (view) & aktionsart (action type). It is argued that the habitual form denotes an aspect category, whereas the stative form denotes an aktionsart category, & that habits & states are different kinds of situations. In Eng, the habitual aspect is more aligned with perfective aspect than with imperfective aspect. Despite notional & formal similarities between habits & states, especially their durative & atelic qualities & their incompatibility with the progressive form, they name different types of action: states are nonagentive, nondynamic, & continuous, whereas habits are agentive, dynamic, & iterative. The incompatibility of states with the progressive arises from their nondynamic nature, whereas the incompatibility of habits with the progressive form arises from their noncontinuous nature. 34 References.
