The Berlin Wall became a symbol initially of the Cold War and then of the end of communism in Eastern Europe, or even of the 'end of history.' The Wall was featured in a number of high historical moments, especially when it fell in November 1989, a euphoric moment celebrated through television. The Wall also functioned as a de facto war memorial. Germans regarded the Wall as a symbol of punishment for the Nazi past, a past that has begun to be renegotiated following the reunification of the country. In addition, the sale of fragments of the Wall symbolizes the commodification of history.
