  • A mathematical catastrophe model is applied to prison disturbances to demonstrate the use of three variables--disorder, tension, & alienation--in systematically analyzing sudden, discontinuous events. To measure the variables, data were collected for each week of 1972 at Gartree Prison where disturbances culminating in a riot in the forty-eighth week had occurred. Tension was measured by counting the number of prisoners reporting in sick & asking for help. Alienation was determined by the number of men being punished & requesting segregation. To assess disorder, disturbances which had occurred during the year were rated on a ten-point scale by seven prison & regional headquarter staff members. The mean value for each week represented the measure of disorder. Although collected retrospectively, the data support the use of the variables in qualitatively measuring a potentially disruptive situation. From the theoretical model, practical suggestions for handling disorder can be derived. While increased communication among prison staff & prisoners will decrease the tension, the model also implies that as tension rises the homeostatic tendency takes effect to restore order even if the administration assumes a neutral position allowing for a "cooling" period. Further investigation from data gathered at Gartree in 1973 is planned. 2 Tables, 4 Figures. J. Massey.
