  • Children are no longer an economic asset to their parents in present US society. This weakens their claims on social resources, making substantial interventions necessary in the framework of child-care institutions now existing. To guide such intervention, childhood social indicators are needed to measure the status of children. Such indicators can be gained through more analysis of federal statistical data, wider availability of such data to researchers in general, repetition of baseline studies, & eventual adoption of a system of national surveys of children. Three premises which presently influence the selection of indicators are that objective & subjective measures are correlated, that becoming is more important than being, & that cognitive & physical growth are more important than sense of self. These assumptions are barriers to the development of vitally needed indicators. W. H. Stoddard.
