  • Why are only certain persons predisposed toward pol'al contention while most people prefer not to be active in politics? The major argument is, that environmental factors alone are not adequate to explain why people enter politics; furthermore, environment has an impact on pol'al behavior only through the mediation of personality. Personality variables can be isolated which have a relationship to pol'al participation which is independent of controls for SES. A Guttman type scale is used to measure a general pol'al participation dimension. A `sociable' personality dimension correlates positively not only with this general dimension but also with 8 of 10 specific types of pol'al activity included in the scale. This relationship persisted, even when the income variable was controlled, for 4 activities (contacting a politician, campaigning, soliciting pol'al funds, & being consulted on policy) that require soc interaction. A summary paragraph suggests several additional personality dimensions that preliminary res had indicated might also go to make up a disposition toward pol'al contention. IPSA.
