Travel and travel writing constituted an important step in the process of female emancipation. The Viennese Ida Pfeiffer was the first internationally recognized white woman to explore remote corners of the world virtually on her own and to write successful books about her experiences. She presented a woman's viewpoint and championed the cause of the poor and oppressed. Her extraordinary accomplishments and progressive social views were rendered more acceptable to her readers by her professed wifely simplicity as well as her endorsement of woman's caring and nurturing role.
