• Hans Jürgen Syberberg's controversial 1990 Vom Unglück und Glück der Kunst in Deutschland nach dem letzten Kriege shares many of the prominent themes of the director's most important work, Hitler, ein Film aus Deutschland (1977), especially a Germanic aestheticism and a fundamental critique of the supposedly Americanized culture of the Federal Republic. In the context of the collapse of the German Democratic Republic in 1989 and German reunification in 1990, Syberberg's thought represents the most forceful and sustained claim that Federal Republican culture has reached its end. It is this claim, and not attacks on the culture of the GDR, that lies at the heart of contemporary German right-wing cultural analysis.
