Despite a certain proximity, Schleiermacher did not follow the path of idealist philosophy of history, which was meant to lead to a rational justification of the historical truth of the Christian faith. Instead he developed, on the basis of the Christian faith, a theological interpretation of history in which the ethical process of a reasonable constitution of the world was included. How the philosophical and the theological interpretation of history relate to one another is still an insufficiently resolved issue in Schleiermacher interpretation. This is the theme of the text at hand. The following will be illustrated in the article: Concerning Schleiermacher, the philosophical interpretation of history needs Christianity as it has been drafted in the theological interpretation of history as its historical bearer. The realization of the historical-philosophical idea of humanity was conceivable for him only from the perspective of a Christian-religious self-interpretation of human rationality.
