  • Bringing Kimberly La Palm on board as the new Executive Director for SASS in early 2019 facilitated many of the positive changes that the SASS leadership has since made, including renewing our nonprofit status, finding a new accountant, acquiring insurance coverage, developing a sexual harassment policy, a new website, and a new logo, and finally revitalizing our monthly News & Notes, which had been sadly defunct for a number of years. Approximately 220 scholars from across the United States and Europe presented their research on Nordic culture, history, literature, art, and music; took part in workshops on language pedagogy; discussed best practices for the public presentation of research; and shared information regarding various professional development opportunities. At the board meeting on the first day, we were delighted to welcome as incoming Executive Council members Amanda Doxtater (University of Washington) representing the area of Languages and Literatures, and Anna Rue (University of Wisconsin-Madison), for the areas of History and Social Science, as well as incoming vice president Andy Nestingen (University of Washington). The Aurora Borealis Prize, which recognizes the best graduate student paper from the previous year's conference, was presented, in the category of Language and Literature, to Theresa Kutasz Christensen (Pennsylvania State University) for her paper "Crossing as the Earl of Donau: Queen Christina of Sweden, Cross-Dressing and Traveling Europe Incognito in the 17th Century"; and, in the category of History and Social Science, to Ellen Ahlness (University of Washington) for her paper, "Greener than Them: Perceptions of Environmental Commitment above the Arctic Circle."
