  • Although the history of museums on Berlin's Museum Island has been minutely researched, one document has never been published, a text that is acutely relevant to the cultural history of Berlin. The Cabinet Order issued by Friedrich Wilhelm IV on 8th March 1841 decreed that the land behind the Königliches (today's Altes) Museum be used as a « haven for art and science ». The Order had been preceded by a report compiled by the Director General of the Royal Museums, Ignaz v. Olfers, dated 20th January 1841, which amounted to a master plan for the future of the university and Berlin's various museum collections. The report moved for both institutions - university and museum - to be sited on the Island. The correspondence with Olfers came at a time when the Prussian monarch was instigating a series of cultural projects designed to have an impact not only at home but also across the larger Germanic cultural area and in other countries of Europe. The first edition of the Cabinet Order, the Olfers Report and a second document authored by Olfers is expected to trigger further research in the run-up to the creation of the Humboldt Forum.
