  • The Aṣlaḥ Triclinium Complex, located outside the entrance to the Sīq of Petra, has been excavated since 2010 by L. Gorgerat and the author. The structures that belong to the complex are the Aṣlaḥ triclinium, two small lateral chambers, chamber tomb Br. 24, some masonry-built structures in front of the tomb, a cistern, a reservoir, channels, various votive niches, and a large group of pit graves. While the triclinium is usually dated by the Aṣlaḥ inscription to about 96/95 BC, the pottery from the excavations in front of the chamber tomb can be dated to the late first century and early first century AD. The tomb continued to be used up to the early second century AD. The discrepancy between the dating of the triclinium and that of the tomb is discussed. The palaeography, the Nabataean king list, unusual features of the triclinium, and differences with the chamber tomb do not support the suggestion of a late date for the Aṣlaḥ inscription. The discrepancy should therefore be explained by the fact that the structures belong to two phases. The Aṣlaḥ Triclinium Complex is usually called a 'sanctuary' but the author considers that there is a need for a clearer definition of this term.
