• Der Erfolg der Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) bei Landtagswahlen seit drei Jahren wirft die Frage nach ihrer Einordnung auf. Wer sie als »rechtspopulistisch« kennzeichnet, hat sich damit noch nicht zu der Frage »demokratisch oder extremistisch?« geäußert. Extremismus ist die Antithese des demokratischen Verfassungsstaates, Populismus ein Politikstil, gekennzeichnet vor allem durch den Antagonismus von Volk und Elite, ebenso durch einen charismatischen Anführer, durch medienwirksame Inszenierung der eigenen Positionen, ferner durch Schaffung von Krisen. Es ergeben sich vier Idealtypen: erstens demokratisch, nicht-populistisch; zweitens extremistisch, nicht-populistisch; drittens extremistisch, populistisch; viertens demokratisch, populistisch. Die AfD ist im Kern eine populistische Partei, auch wenn sie nicht über einen charismatischen Vorsitzenden verfügt, aber keine extremistische, wiewohl ihre Aussagen zum Islam schwammig sind. Eine Konfliktkultur in Deutschland könnte sie schwächen. The recent success of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in state elections provokes the question about the classification of the new party. Who marks it as a populist right-wing party does not explain whether it is democratic or extremist. Populism and extremism should not be measured on the same scale. Extremism is the antithesis of a constitutional democracy, whereas populism is a political style characterized by the antagonism of the people and the elite, a charismatic leader, by sensational presentation of their positions in the media and by creating crises. There are four archetypes: democratic and non-populist; extremist and non-populist; extremist and populist; democratic and populist. The AfD is in its core a populist party – even though strong leadership is missing – but not an extremist party – although statements regarding Islam are vague. A culture of conflict in Germany could weaken the AfD.
