• This is a study of the interpretation of poetry through music with special regard to the lyric ego, to the poet's and the composer's approach to their subject, and to the position of the poem (Lied) in its respective literary and musical context. The author shows that Schumann's understanding of Heine is more profound than that of many scholarly readers. The composer was fully aware of those breaches of continuity so typical of Heine's work and of his entire epoch. A similar inner strife is found in Schumann's writings and compositions. As Heine does, Schumann introduces a Protean, multifaceted ego. However, Schumann's serious attitude is aloof of Heine's self-irony and of his play on different roles.
