My engagement with school-based professional development for teachers began
in 2005 when as the Principal of an all-boys private school in Brunei I sought to
understand why the achievement of students in mathematics and science at my
school was declining. I decided to focus my initial investigation on the classroom.
What I found convinced me of the need for professional development for the
teachers in my school. I introduced lesson study as a way forward but later switched
to the theory informed version known as learning study. In this chapter, I chart
the process from identification of the problem to the possibility of its solution
through school-based professional development, and I explain why for me the
introduction of a theory of learning provided an important underpinning structure for lesson study.
