Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • The author wrote this dedication to her friend and coeditor of this book, Dr. Tiffany Austin. She passed away from complications from a minor foot surgery on June 23, 2018. Tiffany and the author collaborated for many months on Revisiting the Elegy in the Black Lives Matter Era, and in the wake of her death the author decided to forge ahead with the project with the assistance of darlene anita scott and Sequoia Maner. Much like the contemporary elegists that are the subject of this book, James Baldwin refuses to remain silent as the dominant society not only denies black boys and men their beauty but also their humanity. In both the lyric poem “Where will all that beauty go?” and “A South in Sound: A Photo Essay,” Tiffany riffs on Baldwin’s line, and a version of this question has been haunting the author since her death: What will we do without all that beauty?
