• Tschmuck examines how, during the last decade, most of the prestigious Austrian art organizations--such as the Schönbrunn Palace, the Vienna Stautsoper, the Burgtheater, Kunsthistorische Museum, and the Spanish Riding School--have been transformed from state-run departments to autonomous corporations under public law. In the case of the state theaters and the state museums, Tschmuck analyzes the ambiguous results of this "privatization" in a broader sense. On the one hand, the managerial flexibility and autonomy of the institutions' directors have been expanded; on the other hand, the burdens on taxpayers have increased in supporting these privatized entities.
