• The legacy of the Holy Roman Empire continued to preoccupy Germans into the middle of the twentieth century. The article examines the role which the empire played in thinking about the unity of Germany in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. Before 1871 memories of the early modern Reich were prominent. Thereafter Prussian historians generally invoked the medieval Hohenstaufen Empire as a model while their Austrian counterparts cultivated memories of a Catholic Austrian-led empire. The association of these ideas with Nazism finally resulted in a general loss of interest in the Reich, which the revival of scholarly interest in it since the 1960s has not reversed.
