How can landscapes such as those designed for Louis XIV (1638-1715) at Versailles come to symbolize a stable and immutable image of royal or imperial majesty? This paper explores the garden and palace complex in representation through two series of engravings by Israel Silvestre (1621-1691) that document the first great fetes of Louis XIV’s reign: The Grand Carousel held at the Tuileries in Paris in 1662 and the pleasures of the enchanted isle at Versailles in 1664. These images offer an important insight into the role of prints in the representation of kingship through landscape in the early modern world. While the gardens designed by André le Notre (1613-1700) at Versailles still reveal much of the magnificence of their patron, without the presence of Louis XIV and his court, a fragment remains of what was once an inhabited site of performance and ritual
