The history of Christianity in Hungary is chronicled to assess what remodernization means to the Catholic Church there. During its 40-year disengagement from mainstream Church developments in the latter 20th century, the Catholic Church in Hungary was characterized as either precommunist or persecuted. After communism, the Church is experiencing a reattachment to its identity prior to WWII, & is also experiencing a vitalization in a free society. The 1996 circular "social" letter from the Hungarian Bishops' Conference addressed social, economic, & cultural issues with a practical proposal for a social market economy & an acceleration of Western 1960s developments, eg, individualism & common commitment to the Church from below. This letter shows that the Hungarian Catholic Church has taken a step on the road to modernization while reaffirming its traditional role in secular society. M. Pflum
