  • Against the background of theories and research, it is crucial to gather in-depth information about the Big Five personality traits of pedagogues as well as prospective pedagogues. Such information can be attained by comparing them with a cross section of the population. However, there is a research gap concerning the Big Five of early childhood pedagogues. Therefore, this study investigated differences between the Big Five of prospective early childhood pedagogues (N = 1014) and a subsample from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) (N = 1014). Both female and male pedagogues were expected to rate themselves as more extraverted, open, and agreeable than their SOEP counterparts. Results revealed higher openness and agreeableness in the early childhood pedagogue sample, but there were no differences in extraversion. With regard to practical implications, different strategies for dealing with personality traits in vocational training and occupation are discussed. Future research should extend the focus to employed pedagogues.
