• Around the middle of the sixteenth century the Christian Church in Armenia had as its primate a highly able man, Stephanos, the fifth with this name (1541-1564). 1 Recognizing the danger his church was running in the continuous struggles between the Turks and the Persians, both of whom wanted to gain control of Armenia, he decided to look for support from the great Western powers by going himself to see the Doge of Venice, the Roman Pope, the German Emperor, and the King of Poland.
