In this article, the author explores some of the most prominent ways that cultural revitalization has been contemplated within Anishinaabe and anthropological arenas of discourse. She draws reflexively on her own personal positionality and academic theoretical background as well as on her observations of how Anishinaabe anti-clear-cutting activists in northwestern Ontario portray and practice cultural revitalization. While this comparative project is interesting in and of itself, the questions generated by the fact that both indigenous activists and the interested outsiders who research and write about them discuss cultural revitalization may be more critical and timely for the contemporary anthropological study of American Indian peoples and topics. Given the existence of potentially converging and diverging constellations of implication and intention, what might this say about anthropology's changing relationship to its customary "objects" of study? And, given these complexities, how can ethnographers usefully document cultural revitalization processes and events? With Anishinaabe and anthropological views of cultural revitalization as a framing example, the author explores in this article the prospects for developing mutually relevant ethnographic projects based on conscientious consideration and perspectivally integrative analyses of issues that are regarded by both Native communities and social scientists as of central interest.
