  • Readers may be interested to know that the Australian National Dictionary Centre was established in 1988. It conducts research into Australian English and provides lexicographical expertise to Oxford University Press, Australia.Australian English is a fascinating topic. The editor of this second edition of the Australian National Dictionary (AND) is Bruce Moore who is the author of several books on Australian lexicography including What’s Their Story? A History of Australian Words (Moore, 2010) previously reviewed by myself in Reference Reviews (RR 2012/075). This edition of the AND was reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement by none other than Barry Humphries who wrote that “The Editors of this new edition of The AND have magnificently recorded what surely must be the richest vernacular in the history of human utterance”. Mr Humphries (Dame Edna to his fans) does not exaggerate.
