• Ben Anderson died in December 2016 and Indonesia marked his passing in April 2016 with memorial essays from five of Ben's colleagues and friends. Among those essayists was contributing editor Joshua Barker, who wrote: “The late Benedict Anderson was one of a handful of scholars in the social sciences whose work was read across the disciplines and across the world. His most well known book was, of course, Imagined Communities, a key text for political scientists, anthropologists, historians, and students of comparative literature.” The New York Times, too, noted Ben's passing, revisiting briefly his acclaimed Imagined Communities and adding: “[Ben Anderson] was renowned not only for his theoretical contributions but also for his detailed examinations of language and power in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines; he was fluent in Indonesian, Javanese, Thai, and Tagalog … Among his many other works are a collection of essays on nationalism in Southeast Asia; an essay on the social forces behind a 1976 counterrevolution in Thailand, three years after a student revolt there toppled a military dictatorship; an analysis of the influence of anarchist ideas on Filipino nationalism; a travelogue about Wat Phai Rong Wua, a popular Buddhist tourist destination in Thailand that tries to depict what hell would be like; and several books on language, power, violence and belief in Indonesia.” This bibliography comprises most of Ben's works, including his best-known publications as well as some obscure pieces. Given that Ben was a prolific writer, the editors found that producing a comprehensive bibliography was difficult if not impossible.
