This articles analyses Franz Kafka's 'Kleine Fabel' and Robert Walser's 'Das Ende der Welt' as crisis narratives that simultaneously stage and deconstruct modern crisis management. Tracing the history of the term, it first illuminates the modern idea of crisis as a by-product of the temporalization and acceleration of history since the eighteenth century. It then discusses particular kinds of narrative emplotment that aim to enforce preventative crisis management in a rapidly unfolding present. A detailed comparison of the two short prose texts explores how they self-consciously undermine the narratological and epistemological assumptions of modern crisis narration.
