- The AustrianIda Pfeiffer(1797–1858) was one of the first German-languagefemale explorers and travel writers. This essay explores her accounts of theDutch East IndiesandMadagascar, regions not well known in Austria at the time. In her travel writing, she demonstrates that, althoughshaped by colonial discourse, she is relatively free of European cultural biases. For her time she was outspoken against European colonialism, and she challenges and deconstructs European notions of the bloodthirsty and violent ‘savage’.
