Beschreibungen/Notizen
In this century, rapidly expanding knowledge of Hebrew inscriptions from the biblical period has illuminated both the biblical world and the scriptures. Libraries can play an important role in giving people direct or mediated exposure to inscribed objects, arousing interest, stimulating learning, and sometimes fostering a sense of community between religious groups. Almost any library can furnish audiovisual presentations or display inscribed artifacts, replicas, and printed pictures. Several monographs provide outstanding pictorial and scholarly treatments of inscriptions; they all need to be updated and supplemented, especially by three major periodicals. So do otherwise good monographs which contain a sprinkling of obsolete conclusions. Two other potential problems are controversy over the historical reliability of the Bible and ethical issues related to the antiquities market.
