  • I suggest that Paul's mission context in Philippi has interesting similarities to our own in twenty-first century Britain. His hermeneutic and its relationship to his mission work are examined: we could usefully look again at the flexibility of Paul's approach and his willingness to allow fresh experience to impact on his interpretation of the scriptures and traditions available to him. Encounters with individuals in Philippi are examined illustrating that key features of mission include inclusivity, humility and courage. Kingdom values of discerning and trusting God's spirit and seeking justice for the oppressed should take precedence over convention. These values are particularly important for emergent churches.
