When looking at liturgical life in Christian congregations today, one might be forgiven for thinking that gender is a virulent factor across all denominational differences. It seems as if an unintended element of unity has appeared on the ecumenical scene: gender as a liturgical troublemaker. This development obviously owes little to the work of the ecumenical movement; rather, this development is due to broader cultural shifts.
