This article on Peter Longueville's The English Hermit (1727) examines the illustrations that were included in editions from 1727 to 1799. In addition to making sense of the illustrative apparatus of the work's first edition and discussing how it interpreted the typographic text, the article studies the series of wood-engravings that John Bewick furnished for the 1798 abridgment of the text. Focusing on how the vignettes capture the complexity of two of the three books of the novel, I explore how Bewick's vignettes create meanings that relate Quarll's island existence to his spiritual rebirth, including the role his monkey companion, Beaufidelle, plays in the hermit's finding happiness removed from human society. The article concludes with an examination of a 1799 American adaptation of Bewick's series, which promotes a different visual interpretation that no longer introduces the significance of Providence for Quarll.
