The programmatic anchorage of sociological analysis in social action is characteristic for the sociology of Max Weber, and in this respect "paradigmatic". Social action here means the orientation of the individual and his or her "subjective" ascription of meaning on the basis of the orientation of others (although Weber's sociology then solely analyses "objective meaning"). The text shows how Weber develops his approach of social action towards higher structural levels of institutional forms of relation (associations, institutions etc.), and in which way "struggle" (Kampf), "power" (Macht) and "authority" (Herrschaft) mediate between individual action and structure produced by persons. With his emphasis on action as a precondition of every kind of "communitisation" (Vergemeinschaftung) or "socialisation" (Vergesellschaftung), Weber defies all collective theorems from "the left" as well as from "the right." His "personalism," which by far exceeds the merely methodological level, has the "culture-critical" side of a fear of the "end of the subject" to it as well as the activist side of an "ethical program" of responsibility and ascetic self-restriction -- especially in a modernity characterized by processes of rationalization. The "methodification" of life and the theoretical method are determining each other. In addition to this paradigmatic core of the Weberian analysis, further basic principles of his sociology are outlined at the end of the article.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
