This article argues that prose narrative was a key balancing force in Romantic Naturphilosophie. Before the "two cultures" split, cultural force was not artificial, but instead was continuous with natural systems of force. Prose narrative-often identified with technology-was construed by Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Schelling, and Joseph Görres as conserving this cultural force, producing and often disturbing its equilibrium. The article reads Adalbert von Chamisso's Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte against this background. The text exploits this continuity of natural and literary forces to produce a narrative that falls outside the identificatory tradition of the theory of the novel. Chamisso manages to narrate both below and above biographical life, presenting infrabiographical and suprasocial potentials of a nascent biopolitical literature.
