Mexico's first national novel, El Periquillo Sarniento (1816) arose out of a period marked by repeatedly revoked and reinstated freedoms of the press. The instability of this situation and the severity of Colonial censorship motivated the novel's author, the journalist José Joaquin Lizardi, to publish his social criticisms in the form of a serialized novel. Here I will focus on how Lizardi's experimentation with this form was groundbreaking, given its exaggeration of the elements of time and space that Anderson (1983) theorizes as essential in building imagined communities. I will close with a consideration of how the innovations inherent in this hybrid form of novel and newspaper might have affected both readers and listeners in the Mexican nation-to-be.
