This article deals with the possibilities of re-reading a well-known text, Henry de Montherlant’s novel
Les Célibataires
(
1934
), in light of the transformations produced by the photographic illustrations of Georgette Chadourne, which distinguish the original version from a lesser known re-edition published by Plon in 1948. This essay identifies the materials and thematic singularities of this latter volume and proposes an alternate methodology of reading photographic illustrations in the context of the novel. In subsequent sections, the intertextual relationships between these illustrations and other photographic paraphernalia are analyzed in order to sketch a new interpretation of the hybrid, verbo-visual book and to suggest the conflict between seeing and understanding.
