  • [...]the book has two diculties.H. relies heavily on the concept of microstorie borrowed from Carlo Ginzburg (p. 15, referring to Il Formaggio e I Verni, 1976). To my eyes at least, most ofH.s microstorie are not microstorie at all; they are paradigms central to Herodotus eorts at relating the past. Because H. limits her discussion to Herodotus alone (for example, p. 91 n. 4), and tries to exclude external evidence that bears on the events he treats, both literary and documentary, other diculties arise. M.s method of exploring Thucydides presentation of speech and narrative is basically a narratological approach but we must understand the unique features of its compositional structure in terms of the culture of the historians own time and place (p. 10); M.s intended audience includes scholars and specialists in ancient history, philosophy, politics, and literature, but he hopes that his discussion will also interest those studying the transition from orality to literacy in the ancient world, and, furthermore, that undergraduate and graduate students in history and classics may nd particular chapters useful to their study and research (p. 12). [...]all Greek is translated.M. seems to me not altogether successful in his attempt to cater for so many dierent kinds of readers.
