Theissen examines W. G. Sebald's travel in his prose collections. Schwindel. Gefuhle, his first prose collection, emphasizes the singular and contingent experience of displaced subjects over the representative narratives of earlier epochs. Pointing out that his highly stylized travel narratives of the German journey to Italy, while modeled onreverse the pattern established by Goethe's and Grillparzer's eighteenth- and nineteenth-century texts, she notes that the seemingly documentary depiction of reality actually records mostly "events of the pen" and leads the narrator to libraries, museums, and maps.
