Abstract
Although most interpreters believe the Greek of the Gospel according to Mark to be either basic or inelegant, close study shows it to be quite sophisticated and in line with standard/classical Greek exemplars. This is true not only in vocabulary, but also and especially in features of morphology and syntax. The language of the Second Gospel exhibits affinities with that of Plato and Xenophon especially, and thus reflects Greco-Roman linguistic and literary sensibilities.
