  • This vol, in the Studies in Natural Language & Linguistics Theory series, contains 10 Chpts, & presents a series of papers addressing different aspects & hypotheses on the null subject parameter. Osvaldo Jaeggli & Kenneth J. Safir - The Null Subject Parameter and Parametric Theory - provides an overview of the parameter theory within the context of government & binding theory, & empirical issues raised by the existence of the null subject parameter are examined. Some standard assumptions about distribution of phonetically null syntactic entities are reviewed. A programmatic theory of the null subject parameter is presented. J.-Marc P. Authier - Arbitrary Null Objects and Unselective Binding - considers constructions in French containing null elements in object position with similar arbitrary reference. Quantificational force & referential restrictions in Spanish arbitrary null subjects & French arbitrary zero objects are examined, the ways in which these are bound are determined, & a prediction of the analysis is presented. Hagit Borer - Anaphoric AGR - outlines how control can be reduced to the binding condition in complement clauses. Evidence from Korean & Italian illustrates that control effects are not restricted to null elements. Controlled null & overt subjects in tensed clauses as evidenced in Chinese, Hebrew, & Saramaccan are discussed, & various claims made in the AGR work are summarized. Luciana Brandi & Patrizia Cordin - Two Italian Dialects and the Null Subject Parameter - argues that Trentino & Fiorentino should be analyzed as null subject languages although they need phonetic realization of subject clitics. The relationship between subject inversion & the pattern of wh-extraction is addressed, followed by a comparison between the subject clitic inversion phenomena found in Trentino & Fiorentino & the apparently similar construction in French. Sandra Chung - On the Notion "Null Anaphor" in Chamorro - investigates the syntax in Chamorro anaphors & its consequence for the theory of null noun phrases. The background on Chamorro is summarized, & two Chamorro restrictions that pick out anaphors, specifically overt anaphors, & are construed as a test of "anaphorhood" against which different empty NPs can be measured, are discussed. C. T. James Huang - Pro-Drop in Chinese: A Generalized Control Theory - attempts to illustrate that pro-drop facts can be accounted for within a general control theory that determines the reference of both pro & PRO, claiming that the identification hypothesis is correct, but should be interpreted more broadly. This account is briefly compared with R. Manzini's theory (see LLBA 18/1, 8400782). Nina Hyams - The Null Subject Parameter in Language Acquisition - examines the relationship between the parameters of universal grammar & actual, real time grammatical development with particular reference to the pro-drop of null subject parameter, to explain the property exhibited by Italian & Spanish languages of allowing phonologically null subjects in tensed sentences. Richard S. Kayne - Null Subjects and Clitic Climbing - details approaches to clitic climbing of different theorists using examples from Romance languages to discuss this type of climbing & its relationship to null subjects, illustrating that it is less exotic than it may appear. Issues that arise from this discussion are addressed. Michael Kenstowicz - The Null Subject Parameter in Modern Arabic Dialects - compares two modern colloquial Arabic dialects, Levantine Arabic & Bani Hassan, with respect to the null subject parameter to support the argument that when attention is restricted to a particular syntactic context, the dialects pattern as Italian & English do, with clauses headed by the complementizer innu 'that'. Eduardo Raposo - Prepositional Infinitival Constructions in European Portuguese - studies some of the properties of these constructions & European Portuguese mainly with respect to constituent structure, categorical nature, case & thematical role assignment, & binding theory.
