  • eng: Applications in quantum information science require sources of quantum light. Here, sources that emit single photons or pairs of polarization entangled photons are of particular importance. In this theoretical work quantum light sources based on two-photon transitions from quantum-dot biexcitons are studied. Therefore, the von Neumann equation is solved numerically. The coupling to the environment is treated in the Born-Markov approximation. The biexciton emits polarization entangled photons. In contrast to the usual cascaded emission process via the excitons the degree of polarization entanglement is insensitive to the fine-structure splitting of the excitons. At low temperatures, this process is robust against the phonon-assisted cavity feeding. The spectral and quantum-statistical properties of the emitted photons are characterized. Additionally, the emission from the biexciton into high-Q bimodal cavities for a special case of resonance energies is studied. It can be shown that a high degree of polarization entanglement can be reached under these circumstances. A two-photon emission process can also be used to generate single photons. A novel single photon emission scheme is proposed that uses a laser pulse to drive the system from the biexciton into a virtual state inside the band gap from which a single photon is emitted once the system relaxes to its ground state. The properties of the single photon such as its polarization state, frequency and time of emission can be controlled optically in this higher order process. The emission scheme is enhanced by a high-Q cavity but it does not rely on it. The indistinguishability of the emitted photons and the possibility for on-demand generation of single photons is examined. Two-photon processes from a quantum dot biexciton are a versatile source for the generation of quantum light, as required in future quantum ...
