ger: Motivation, diese Forschungsarbeit zu betreiben, waren Pracht und Erhabenheit einer Kunstgattung, welche einerseits zahlreiche Werke zur Machtinszenierung hervorbrachte, andererseits aber aus dem Fokus der Kunstdokumentation und der öffentlichen Aufmerksamkeit geraten ist. So erklärt sich der Inhalt dieser Dissertation, welche neben einer politischen, emanzipatorischen, soziologischen und ästhetischen Betrachtung der Tapisserie als Monumentalkunst, auf der Grundlage von Zeitdokumenten und Zeitzeugeninterviews die Bedeutung, Geschichte, Produktion und Entwicklung des Gobelins und des Bild- und Knüpfteppichs in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik beschreibt. Es werden das Zentrum der Gestalterausbildung - die Hochschule für Industrieelle Formgestaltung Halle -, die PGH „Volkskunst an der Ostsee“ mit dem Freester Fischerteppich, wichtige Orte und die staatliche Textil- und Gobelinmanufaktur VEB HAWEBA in Halle (Saale) als Hauptproduktionsstätte von Gobelins in der DDR beschrieben. Es werden in dieser Schrift Künstler, Künstlergruppen und ihre Arbeitsweisen beleuchtet. Zur Sprache kommen die für die Textilkunst typischen Ausstellungs- und Handelsmethoden in Museen und Galerien der DDR, Wege und Schwierigkeiten der Auftragsvergabe und der Materialbeschaffung.Die Dissertation thematisiert darüber hinaus die Strenge der Vorgaben, im Sinne des Sozialistischen Realismus zu arbeiten, den Einfluss politischer Führung auf die Motivwahl einerseits, andererseits die künstlerische Freiheit und die Formalismusdebatten der Kulturfunktionäre. In einem Katalogteil wird versucht, in Form eines Registers die stilistische Entwicklung des ostdeutschen Bildteppichs chronologisch abzubilden. Somit ist das Fazit der Thesis die Beschreibung einer Kunstgattung, welche sich durch deutliche Alleinstellungsmerkmale als Epoche ausweist.
eng: This dissertation is motivated by the magnificence and the grandeur of a genre of arts which created many works for the representation of political power, but is forgotten by public interest when it comes to its intrinsic worth.Broadening this traditional focus the dissertation reflects emancipatory, sociological and aesthetical reception of the tapestry as monumental art built on contemporary historical documents and witness interviews. It is aimed to show a well-rounded picture of development and production strategies of tapestry in the German Democratic Republic establishing the genre not only as representation of its era, but also in its solitary significance.The producers' cooperative „Volkskunst an der Ostsee“,“Freester Fischerteppich” and the “VEB HAWEBA” at Halle (Saale) are characterized as the center of production of state-owned manufactory of gobelin in the GDR with “Hochschule für Industrieelle Formgestaltung Halle” playing a big part in educating artists working in aforementioned institutions. Furthermore the methods of trading and exhibition in galleries are described, considering and the full spectrum of museums in a given area, the role of artists and artist-companies as well as strategies for acquiring materials and contracts.This dissertation also sheds light on the severe iconographic standards of socialistic realism in the textile art: On one hand the influence of political elite in the finding of picture-motifs, on the other hand the artistic freedom, between the controversies of formalism postulated culture-officials. The appendix of this work attempts to represent a chronologically structured catalogue of stylistic development of East German tapestry.
