  • Reflectivity maps of Europe and the United States of America have been compiled to summarize major variations in the reflection character of the crust. Significant differences in reflectivity—largely independent of seismic technique—are observed and systematic correlations with tectonic setting are found. Reflectivity, concentrated in the lower crust as bands or lamellae, is predominant in post‐orogenic extensional areas, i.e. regions of orogenic collapse. Stable crustal units of Precambrian age seem to be characterized by more diffuse reflectivity, mostly decreasing with depth, and by frequent diffraction‐like events. Compressional areas are marked by ramp and flat structures (thin‐skinned tectonics) or special reflection‐diffraction patterns (thick‐skinned tectonics), further by seismic “crocodiles” and seismic duplexes. Major shear zones are characterized by deep‐reaching, dipping reflection zones.
