• The aim of this chapter is to detail the stable but also the metastable heterogeneous equilibria which are involved in the formation polymorphs and solvates. After recalling the concept of thermodynamic equilibrium and other basic notions, unary, binary and some ternary systems are contemplated. A special emphasis is given on the impact of solid solutions on those heterogeneous equilibria via the representations of relevant phase diagrams. Formations of: solvates, mixed solvates and heterosolvates are rationalized as well as their partial or total desolvations.
