Protic tautomerism is an important feature of biologically relevant heterocycles and many potentially useful synthetic systems. This chapter discusses protic tautomerism in two quite diverse families of compounds: the related oxoporphyrinogen (OxP) and oxocorrologen (OxC) macrocycles, and the pyrazinacenes. These compounds have potential applications due to the tautomeric properties that they exhibit. These applications may lie across diverse fields including molecular electronics, sensing, and some bulk applications. The compounds OxP, OxC, and the pyrazinacenes are highly colored compounds. Additionally, although OxP and OxC are only weakly fluorescent, the pyrazinacenes exhibit very strong fluorescence emission. By virtue of color changes that occur upon tautomerization in the OxP system, it is possible to develop a multichromic probe of acidity in organic solvents. The synthesis of linearly‐fused oligo‐1,4‐pyrazines, the pyrazinacenes, has revealed the possibility of preparing reduced derivatives of pyrazinacenes that could undergo protic tautomerization.
