• This chapter provides an outline of trauma‐informed care in the criminal justice system. Introducing the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA)'s approach and core principles to address trauma, it challenges readers to think about offending behaviour through the lens of trauma. The chapter provides the implementation of trauma‐informed services in prison settings. It focuses on how trauma‐informed care in the criminal justice system may help to reduce recidivism. In the trauma‐informed approach, SAMHSA maintains that all people at all levels of the organisation or system have a basic realisation about trauma and understand how trauma can affect families, groups, organisations and communities as well as individuals. SAMHSA's six key principles of the trauma‐informed approach include safety; trustworthiness and transparency; peer support; collaboration and mutuality; empowerment, voice and choice; and cultural, historical and gender issues.
